People living in the United Kingdom are using their plastic more than they have in the past. Whether they use one to spread the cost of a purchase that is expensive over a long period of time or it is just easier to carry than is money, more purchases are being made with credit cards than ever before.
Why Use a Credit Card?
When you use a credit card and use it wisely it allows one to build a solid credit history which is so necessary today in order to make such purchases as a new car or home. Having good credit ensures that you will receive the best offers as to interest rates and payback options. Having a credit card on hand is sometimes easier than keeping track of a wad of bills. If your money is lost or stolen you have no other recourse than to take a loss, whereas if you lose or have your credit card stolen you can report the card missing before any purchases are made in your name or dispute charges that were not made by you. In today’s world it makes sense to have at least one credit card for emergencies or for collateral when you want to hire a car for example.
Your Monthly Balance
Typically when you get your monthly credit card statement you will only have a minimum amount due that must be paid by a certain date. This means the balance is subject to whatever the interest rate that you have agreed upon with the issuing credit card company. This can mean a huge loss in funds if you pay just the minimum. If at all possible, try and pay off the complete balance each month so you are not wasting valuable cash on interest. Another rule of thumb is to avoid paying your credit card bills late as you can accrue late fees that will further add to the debt that is owed.
Find a Card with Rewards
Not only is the interest rate important when you are considering one credit card over another, but using a card that will give you rewards each time you use it is a smart idea. If you are a frequent traveler, a credit card that offers you miles or points towards airfare would be in your best interest. Some cards offer gift rewards and some even cash. There are those cards that deposit a certain percentage of your purchase into a savings account for you which is a terrific reward option for those that don’t need unnecessary merchandise.
Having a credit card takes a lot of responsibility to ensure that you don’t get in over your head with debt. Knowing how to manage your credit is important if you don’t want to spend the rest of your life owing someone else for purchases that are long gone and forgotten. Use your credit card wisely and be sure that you protect your information so that credit card fraud is not an option for thieves. |
